TraumaSense

TraumaSense is an innovative, trauma-responsive, psychoeducational programme designed to empower individuals by providing an accessible understanding of trauma.

General trauma services tend to be focused on psychotherapeutic interventions and while these approaches are valuable, they often fall short of addressing the physiological nature of trauma. Many individuals who have experienced chronic trauma feel disconnected from their bodies, unaware of how trauma manifests as physical sensations, stress responses, and trauma-responsive behaviours. TraumaSense fills this gap by offering a structured programme that demystifies trauma in a non-therapeutic setting.

TraumaSense is not a therapeutic intervention, but a facilitated 1:1 programme that provides an important foundation that enables parents to recognise their capacity for change and take ownership of their role as parents, partners, and community members. It has a strong focus on building psychological awareness, emotional regulation, and personal agency and offers parents the tools, insight, and support to:

  • Understand the effects of trauma on their brain, body and behaviour;

  • Reconnect with their internal sense of safety and control;

  • Reclaim agency and emotional regulation;

  • Build healthier boundaries and relationships.

  • Begin healing from the often invisible wounds of coercive control, fear, isolation, and shame;

  • Challenge and reshape unhelpful core beliefs (schemas) formed through trauma;

  • Recognise and reduce maladaptive coping mechanisms that may no longer serve them;

  • Break cycles of trauma bonding and intergenerational trauma, becoming cycle-breakers for the next generation;

This programme is available to any parents engaged who have traumatic experiences that impact their ability to parent effectively. It is particularly suitable for:

  • Adult men and women who have survived domestic abuse or coercive control;

  • Those whose recovery is complicated by long-standing trauma responses;

  • Victim-survivors whose difficulties in communication, parenting, or decision-making may be misunderstood as non-engagement or resistance in child protection processes;

  • Individuals who feel isolated, dysregulated, or disempowered by ongoing family court proceedings or systems of authority;

  • Victims of generational trauma, with rigid belief systems and maladaptive coping mechanisms.

It is not suitable for individuals still requiring active crisis intervention. Referral pathways should ensure that participants have a basic level of safety and stability before joining the programme.

Programme session content and delivery

This 12 session programme is delivered on a one-to-one basis using video calling with subjects including:

  • Understanding trauma and the stress response system.

  • Cultivating safety and stability.

  • The long-term impact of chronic stress.

  • The impact of trauma on the brain.

  • Wellbeing.

  • Protective factors and resilience.

  • Power, control and personal agency.

  • Reflection and personal action plan for next steps.

As a psychoeducational course, TraumaSense does not set outcomes in terms of parenting thresholds or measurable behaviour change. Instead, the following internal outcomes are hoped for:

  • Increased self-awareness and emotional insight;

  • Improved emotional regulation and coping;

  • Strengthened sense of agency and control;

  • Renewed motivation for personal development;

  • Recognition of the impact of abuse and a rejection of blame;

  • An understanding of healthy boundaries and relational dynamics.

At the conclusion of the programme, a Participant Engagement and Learning Summary is produced. This is not a report, nor is it a clinical evaluation. It is a collaborative reflection based on:

  • Attendance and engagement;

  • Self-assessment data at weeks 1 and 12;

  • General facilitator observations about participant progress and participation;

  • Discussion of any external factors (e.g., ongoing stalking, family court stress) that may be impacting progress;

  • An optional summary from the participant.
